Description
Blyxa japonica is an attractive aquatic plant exclusively growing underwater. It naturally occurs in shallow ponds, swamps, and slow-moving, iron-rich forest rivers across subtropical and tropical East and Southeast Asia. The plant forms beautiful, moderately tall, grass-like bushes with very narrow leaves that range in color from light green to reddish hues.
Highly favored in the aquascaping community, Blyxa japonica thrives when essential care requirements are met. These include sufficient lighting (30–60 lumens per liter or more), CO2 supplementation (although not mandatory), and regular fertilization with nitrates, phosphates, potassium, and micronutrients. Under optimum conditions, the leaves develop golden and reddish shades and the plant grows more compact. With insufficient light, however, it tends to grow taller, lankier, and greener.
This true aquatic species does not grow emersed (above water), with only its small white flowers breaking the water surface. Besides its native range in Asia, Blyxa japonica has been introduced to Europe, where it can also be found in rice cultivation areas such as northern Italy.
Currently, the commonly traded variety in the aquarium hobby is Blyxa japonica var. japonica.
Ideal for midground or foreground groups in aquascapes due to its medium height and manageable growth habit.
